A masterful pitching performance by junior Dhruv Patel, and timely late-inning hitting by classmates, Robert Poindexter and Will Seiler, propelled Lovett to a 2-0 win in Game Three of the 2018 GHSA AAA Baseball State Championship Series, held May 24, in State Mutual Stadium, Home of the Rome Braves. Lovett's second run was scored when pinch runner William Marino scored on a base hit by Peyton Ringer.
Sophomore left-handed reliever, David Underwood, shut down a sixth inning rally by Westminster. Senior sidearm ace, Nelson Wyatt, then gave a bulldog-like performance, coaxing fly ball outs from the final three Wildcats at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, and final inning.
The win was Lovett's ninth baseball state title, continuing the program's legacy of being one of the state's most successful. Only two other teams, in all classifications, have better state tournament series records than the Lions' mark of 74-19.
