Lovett’s club Water Polo team capped off an exciting inaugural
season by heading to the Cumming Aquatic Center on Saturday for the Georgia High School Water Polo State Tournament, where the 12th ranked Lions wrapped up their very first season with 5 games, 3 wins and a 5th place finish. All battled cold water, extreme chlorine, and exhaustion as they worked their way through the tournament. Senior Will Schmersal’s outstanding leadership and non-stop play made him the stand-out player of the tournament. His versatility at many positions, ability to direct the play, and exceptional defense made him a target for the opponents, and they were merciless. However, these efforts were matched by goalie, sophomore Blaise Achecar, whose quick reactions stopped countless shots on goal, including many one-on-one penalty shots.
Leading the Lions offensively were freshman Chris Lee with 11 goals, senior Nick Thurkow-Schlund with 7 goals, and sophomore Pross Watts with 7 goals. Junior Byron Lathi and sophomores Stewart Hammond and Joseph Jarrett were instrumental with powerful offensive and defensive play. Sophomores Harper Finch, Alex Maner, Brendan Okeson, and Laura Pencea with freshmen Daniel Johnson, William Kahn, Ben Thurkow-Schlund, and Harold Wyatt brought strong efforts and welcome relief from the bench.
A huge thank you goes to Coaches Nolan Morris, Jennifer King, and Chris Lee who graciously gave time and talent to 31 Lions players, helping them learn a new sport and bringing another opportunity to Lovett.
