Summer Enrichment at the Grand Canyon

Lovett's endowed summer study and travel funds allow faculty to take advantage of professional development opportunities that might not be feasible during the school year. Middle School science teacher Diane Husmann attended the Geology on the Edge class, sponsored by the Grand Canyon Association Field Institute. Upon her return, she offered this reflection:

“The Grand Canyon is famous for all its beauty and the stories the many exposed rock layers tell. The Geology on the Edge Class, given by the Grand Canyon Association Field Institute, is an immersion in geologic time.  Scientists from all over the world visit to study the layers of the rocks and debate the continued mysteries of their formation. I am excited to share this experience with both teaching partners and students. The thrill of standing on a 1.8 billion-year-old rock and knowing that this remarkable landform is considered to be one of the seven wonders of the world is beyond description. This was an experience that has made an impact on me and will create a ripple effect over time as I share it with my students.”
