Summer Enrichment at Writers Retreat

Lovett's endowed summer study and travel funds allow faculty to take advantage of professional development opportunities that might not be feasible during the school year.

Upper School English teacher Anne Konigsmark attended a weeklong writing master class for authors with projects in progress. Upon her return, Anne offered this reflection:

“I was so fortunate to attend the Lighthouse Writers Workshop ‘Lit Fest’ in Denver. I was able to workshop my own writing in a weeklong master class led by author Geoff Dyer. In the afternoons, I attended sessions on everything from getting unstuck when you have writer’s block to the use of grotesque characters in Flannery O’Connor’s work. Evenings were for readings and ‘smackdowns’ on literary topics with authors such as Rebecca Makkai, Renee Gladman, Sarah Manguso, Elizabeth McCracken, and Geoff Dyer. I learned a lot about the writing process; I was introduced to some authors I did not know; and I steeped for a week in good words and compelling stories. There were other high school teachers in attendance and it was great to compare notes about life as a writer/teacher, but also about our curricula. Thanks, Lovett! I feel really lucky to have had this experience.”
